The Supreme Court Monday stayed for three weeks day-to-day trial in an 18-year-old corruption case against Tamil Nadu CM J Jayalalithaa on a request by the Special Public Prosecutor (SPP), who sought the postponement for his medical treatment.

A bench led by by Justice B S Chauhan partly allowed a plea by SPP G Bhawani Singh, who pleaded for time on account of his illness. Singh had approached the SC against the order of the Karnataka HC declining his request.

On a plea by the AIADMK chief, the SC had quashed the Karnataka government’s decision to remove Singh in the corruption case pending against her in a Bangalore court.

The court underscored the change (from BJP to Congress) of political regime in the state and said “the sharp transitional decision was an act of clear unwarranted indiscretion actuated by an intention that does not appear to be founded on good faith”.
