Yoga was part of the bilateral talks that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin had in Ufa, Russia on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit.

PM Modi thanked Putin for his country’s encouraging involvement in the grand International Yoga Day celebrations on June 21. Delegates from over a hundred countries, including Russia, had descended in New Delhi that day to participate in the Yoga demonstration which was led by PM Modi.

In response, Putin quite candidly admitted that he hadn’t tried Yoga yet.

“I will consider what I can do in Yoga, similar to what I do in sports. It is, when you see people who practice Yoga, that you realize that it is very hard to reach that kind of perfection. But this is what prevents me from trying Yoga,” said Putin during the bilateral talks.

Putin is considered to be a master of many sports including judo, hunting and swimming.

Earlier in June, during an interaction with reporters in Moscow, Putin was surprised to know that PM Modi had started a government ministry (Ministry of Ayush) for the encouragement of Yoga. He also asked during the course of the interaction whether PM Modi himself practiced Yoga.
