The Karnataka government Tuesday set up a Special Investigation Team (SIT), headed by an additional DGP, to investigate the corruption charges in the state Lokayukta.
Karnataka Lokayukta Justice Y Bhaskar Rao, whose son’s name has surfaced in the alleged extortion racket operating in Lokayukta itself, had earlier asked the government to get the charges investigated by an “appropriate agency”.
The government’s decision comes amid internal battle in the Lokayukta between Justice Bhaskar Rao and his deputy Justice Subhash Adi on the modalities of the investigation in the case.

It has been alleged that there was an attempt by unidentified persons operating out of Lokayukta’s office and home to extort money from a government engineer to prevent initiation of corruption proceedings against him. Initially, Justice Adi ordered Lokayukta police to investigate the matter. As allegations about possible involvement of Lokayukta’s son, Ashwin Rao, surfaced, Justice Rao overruled his deputy and sought a probe by Bangalore police.
Justice Rao said he would not resign until proper evidence is brought to prove the involvement of his family members.
