Setting the stage for what it called a “heated” political campaign, the Election Commission on Monday announced that polls for the 70-member Delhi Assembly would be held on February 7, and counting of votes would take place on February 10.

The EC added that the Model Code of Conduct would come into force in the National Capital Territory with immediate effect. “The Commission is determined to enforce the Model Code of Conduct strictly and ruthlessly,” said Chief Election Commissioner V S Sampath.
“Delhi will witness a very heated political campaign because these polls are only for Delhi and the attention of all political parties will be here,” said Sampath. Stating that “use of money power” was a big challenge, he said the panel would adopt a “zero-tolerance” approach.

A total of 1.30 crore voters are eligible to vote across 11,763 polling stations in the NCT.
The EC also announced the schedule for bypolls for one Lok Sabha seat in West Bengal and six Assembly seats in Arunachal Pradesh, Goa, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh.

Voting will take place on February 13 and counting will be on February 16.

The Delhi assembly was dissolved in November last year after no party come up with the required number to form the government.
In the 2013 elections, Delhi had delivered a fractured mandate. The BJP won 32 seats while AAP made a spectacular debut bagging 27 seats.
Congress, on the other hand, was reduced to just eight seats in the 70 member assembly after ruling Delhi for 15 years.
