Security forces achieved a major success on Friday when the Assam Police and Army troops in a joint operation apprehended eight NDFB(S) militants – two of them directly involved in one of the five attacks of December 23 – and recovered from them a huge cache of weapons including four AK-47 rifles.

“While we managed to apprehend them without any major exchange of fire or any casualty, we have confirmed two of them to be directly involved in the attack on an Adivasi village in Pakhriguri in Kokrajhar district on December 23,” LR Bishnoi, IGP for the Bodoland Territorial Autonomous Districts (BTA) area told The Indian Express.

I P Bishnoi said the two most important catches on Friday were one Mithinga alias Milon Mushahary, self-styled second-in-command of the NDFB(S) faction for Kokajhar region, and one Khurai alias Swmkhwr Brahma. “Both of them had led the attack on the Adivasi villagers in Pakhriguri killing five persons including two children on the spot,” the IGP said.

The recoveries included four AK-47 rifles, one HK33 rifle, one Insas rifle, four 9-mm pistols, 12 Chinese grenades, 300 rounds of live ammunition, six magazines, incriminating documents, four cartons of medicine, the IGP said.

Altogether 31 persons were killed in three simultaneous attacks in Kokrajhar district in the December 23 attacks. With 50 deaths in two other simultaneous attacks in Sonitpur district, the total death toll in last month’s attacks went up to 81.

The operation, carried out inside the Kachugaon reserved forest in Kokrajhar district, close to the India-Bhutan border in the wee hours today also led to recovery of 12 sets of uniforms resembling army fatigues, and several cartons of medicine. “Operations are still on and we expect to make some more apprehensions and recoveries,” the IGP said.
