Punjab Vigilance Bureau on Thursday caught red-handed District Transport Officer Gurtej Singh, his driver Sukhjit Singh and two gunmen — Didar Singh and Kuldip Singh — while taking a bribe at the DTO office in Moga.

The Bureau, following a complaint by Avtar Singh — owner of Punjab Gujarat Raodways in Bathinda — had laid a trap to catch the DTO and his associates red handed.

According to Avtar Singh, his transport company owns 69 vehicles (18 tyred trucks),which ferry cement and other building material to Pathankot and other cities. But while crossing Moga,Gurtej Singh, his driver and the two gunmen used to confiscate his vehicles and asked for bribes on a monthly basis. If he refused to pay,the vehicles were confiscated and fined.

Avtar first contacted the DTO and struck a deal that he will pay Rs 400 per vehicle per month. He then informed the Vigilance of the set up. On Thursday, when Avtar went to pay the first installment of Rs 16,000 to the DTO,a Vigilance team raided the office and caught the DTO and his associates. Mohali Vigilance Bureau Flying Squad Superintendent Hargobind Singh said: “The company owner told us that his vehicles were being stopped in Moga and DTO and his team was harassing him for bribe. We planned this trap… When we raided the office, the driver of the DTO was counting the money and keeping it in his pocket in front of the DTO.”

The Vigilance has also recovered Rs 16,000 from the DTO. “We have brought the accused to Mohali for further investigations,” he added.
