Don’t rename Aurangzeb Road, name new road after Kalam, says Mayawati

'Kalam and Aurangzeb are important personalities of their times. Renaming a road named after one such personality is wrong and also earns bad name for the country', Mayawati said.

BSP chief Mayawati on Monday demanded that the Union government’s order to rename Aurangzeb Road in New Delhi after A P J Abdul Kalam be withdrawn, saying that both the Mughal emperor and the former president are important personalities of their times.

Claiming that this was “inappropriate” and shows “narrow-mindedness”, Mayawati said in a statement: “Kalam and Aurangzeb are important personalities of their times. Renaming a road named after one such personality is wrong and also earns bad name for the country.” A new road should be named after Kalam, she added.

Targeting the Centre, the BSP chief said the 18-day-long Monsoon Session of Parliament was wasted because of “political rivalry” between the government and Opposition. “Couldn’t the BJP leadership set up a good example before the people by taking a small action, if not a strict one, against those who gave shelter to corruption and the corrupt?” she said.
