Dalbir Singh to take over as Army chief today

A highly decorated officer, Dalbir Singh is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy (NDA), Khadakwasla.

LT Gen Dalbir Singh will take over as the Chief of Army Staff from General Bikram Singh Thursday. Presently the Vice Chief of Army Staff (VCOAS), Dalbir Singh served as General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GOC-in-C) of the Army’s Eastern Command earlier.

His rise from the modest beginnings to the highest office of the Army comes with rich operational experience. His four-decade-long career includes commanding a Corps in the Northeast, looking after the dual responsibility of Counter Insurgency (CI) Ops and conventional operational tasks along the India-China border besides tactical and operational levels of command in active CI and proxy war environments. He has also commanded a mountain division along the Line of Control.

Meanwhile, Air Chief Marshal Arup Raha took over as the chairman, Chiefs of Staff Committee Wednesday. Raha received the baton from General Bikram Singh who retires Thursday. Raha takes over as chairman, COSC, by virtue of being the senior-most of the three service chiefs.
