A day after Chief Minister Parkash Sing Badal demanded the removal of “illogical and utterly unrealistic conditions” imposed by the Centre as riders on the release of funds for schemes and relief measures that are carried out by states, the Punjab Youth Congress (PYC) on Monday claimed the CM has admitted that people friendly Centrally sponsored projects are the only lifelines that are helping the cash-starved Punjab.

Badal’s statement on Monday referred to the Centre’s move to stop funds for the state’s ambulance service, one of the reasons being that Badal’s pictures were pasted on the vehicles. After issuing a number of warnings, the Centre stopped the grant for the ambulance service last week. Funds worth Rs 10 crore were given annually under the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM). Punjab Youth Congress had repeatedly complained on the issue, following which warnings were issued.

“The CM’s statement revealed that he has finally admitted that this was a Central government scheme. The PYC had protested across the state and cases were registered against 200 youth activists for removing the CM’s pictures from ambulances,” PYC chief Vikramjit Singh Chaudhry said on Monday.

“Union Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad has directed all states to follow a uniform design for free transport referral system under NRHM. But the Punjab government did not adhere to the directions,” he added.
