Body of missing Meerut girl found, friend arrested

The teachers have accused the police of inaction in the case involving two influential families in the district.

A day after police recovered the body of a missing minor girl near Sardhana and arrested her friend for allegedly killing her, the father and the grandfather of the accused on Friday were also taken into custody on suspicion of destroying evidence in the case.

The body of Class XII student Devalika was recovered from a field near Sardhana town on Thursday morning. The girl had gone missing on Monday evening after she left home for tutions.

The police had arrested her friend Sawan, son of prominent businessman Rakesh Kumar Jain, after teachers and students of Meerut College on Thursday stalled the B Ed entrance examination, demanding a CBI investigation into the case. The parents of the girl — Pradeep Yadav and Ruby — are professors at the college.

Sawan has confessed to his crime, saying he killed Devalika after a minor altercation, SSP Onkar Singh told The Indian Express.

The teachers have accused the police of inaction in the case involving two influential families in the district. Devalika’s mother is neice of a senior Samajwadi Party leader.

SHO of Nauchandi police station Vinod Kumar Singh said, “While checking mobile call details of the three accused, we came to know that they were near Sardhana on October 7. However, Sawan’s father and grandfather Vinod Kumar had told the police that they did not go to Sardhana that day.”
