A 27-year-old woman and her 43-year-old mother-in-law were allegedly gangraped Tuesday night at Amta’s Muktichowk area in Howrah.  Seven of the eight accused, arrested in a nightlong search, were produced at Uluberia court Wednesday and sent to ten-day police  custody.

Earlier, a complaint was filed at Amta Police Station against eight persons, all reportedly Trinamool Congress supporters. The victims were taken to Amta Gramin Hospital first and shifted to Uluberia sub-divisional Hospital later.  Senior police officials, including Sanjay Singh, IG, South Bengal; Anand Kumar, DIG (Presidency Range), along with the SP and the Additional SP, visited the spot and the hospital where they spoke to the victims.

“We have received a complaint against eight persons. Seven have been arrested and one is absconding. A case of gangrape has been started. The victims have been sent for medical tests,” said Sukhendu Heera, additional SP. It has been learnt that following a clash between CPM and TMC supporters recently, most CPM men against whom cases were filed were absconding and waiting for anticipatory bails. The men of the victims’ family were also reportedly absconding.
A delegation of Left Front, which visited the hospital Wednesday, was not allowed to meet the victims.
