With BTech counselling sessions receiving poor response,it now seems to be the turn of Lateral Entry Entrance Test (LEET) counselling to go the same way.

Around 92 per cent seats of Jalandhar’s Punjab Technical University Lateral Entry Entrance Test (PTU LEET) are lying vacant after the first round of counselling. The second and final round of counselling came to an end on July 25. Earlier,Out of a total of 32,196 seats in PTU,around 8,000 were filled in the first counselling of BTech.

Under lateral entry system, diploma holders in technical education are admitted to second year or third semester of BTech courses to acquire a degree in engineering. Candidates who wish to seek admission through lateral entry in engineering can participate in the two rounds of LEET counselling.

There are 32,196 engineering seats in PTU colleges across the state. In addition, there are 19,000 seats for LEET students. Out of the 19,000 seats — this year’s 6,400 new seats and 12,600 vacant seats transferred from previous years — are up for grabs under LEET,said PTU authorities. Out of these 19,000 seats, only 1,441 were allotted in the first round of the counselling — 7.5 per cent of the total seats.

For the second and final counselling — which ended on Thursday — only 2,700 students had applied till July 24.

Institutes affiliated to Jalandhar PTU,Amritsar’s Guru Nanak University,Patiala’s Punjab University,Ludhiana’s Punjab Agricultural University and others admit students based on counselling conducted by PTU LEET.

“We were getting good response in the second round owing to declaration of diploma course results. Students, after doing technical diploma courses, can participate in LEET,” Deputy Registrar Ik Onkar Singh said.
