At least one rape and a murder occur every two days in Mumbai, reveals a report compiled by Praja Foundation. According to the data obtained through the Right to Information Act,on an average 8 housebreak-ins,5 chain snatchings,18 thefts,5 accidents and 12 vehicle thefts take place in the city every day.
This data, compiled for the period of April 2008-March 2010,also throws light on the number of police personnel required to ensure the safety of citizens.
Nitai Mehta, the founder trustee of Praja Foundation, said on Wednesday,We are gathering and compiling these facts with the objective of launching a petition campaign on November 29 which will address issues of the police force reforms. We would be presenting the signed petitions to Home Minister RR Patil so that action could be taken in this regard.
The data shows that south Mumbai, which has 25 police stations, has maximum number of theft and murder cases registered and also face the maximum shortage of personnel. There are 90 murder cases and 3,037 theft cases on record in these 25 police stations in the last 2 years and there is a shortage of 403 personnel. North west Mumbai has seen the highest number of molestation cases with 100 cases registered in the past two years whereas north central Mumbai has recorded 75 rape cases in the same period.
Mehta also raised the issue of lack of basic amenities provided to the police force. Police personnel across the city face problems like lack of proper housing facilities and political influence. Unless these issues are tackled, the problems faced by the department cannot be resolved satisfactorily, Mehta said.
Mehta added that their campaign would address issues like the shortage of police personnel in the city, update on police reforms implemented so far and the steps being taken to improve the safety of citizens. We would also approach city MLAs through Praja Dialogue, our newsletter which will carry a report on the campaign along with an appeal to ask the right questions during Assembly sessions, added Mehta Praja Foundation is an organisation formed in 1997 for empowering the citizens and the government.
