Even as Faridkot remained shut on Monday following protests over the alleged abduction of a minor, police have reportedly nabbed an accomplice of Nishan Singh (18),who allegedly kidnapped the girl from her residence on September 24. The protests were held after an action committee, formed to tackle hooliganism, called for the agitations citing police failure in arresting Nishan Singh.
The girl,a Class X dropout, was kidnapped in broad day light at gunpoint while her abductors allegedly assaulted her father Ashwani Kumar Sachdeva, mother Seema Rani, grandfather, grandmother and elder sister.
Police, however, said efforts were on to trace the main accused. We have constituted six teams to locate the boy. We hope to get a breakthrough by tonight (Monday),failing which,we will review our line of investigation, DIG,Ferozepur range,Paramraj Singh Umranangal, said.
He,however, did not confirm the arrest. Since police pressure began to mount, the boy and all his accomplices have switched off their mobile phones. We have raided a few places in Mohali and Panchkula, where these boys could be, Umranangal added.
Meanwhile, father of the kidnapped girl,Ashwani Kumar Sachdeva, while talking to The Indian Express from his hospital bed, said: My daughter was kidnapped by the same boy in June this year too. Police had then ensured that she was back home safe but did not arrest the boy. We had pleaded to them at that time. Had they arrested him, this would not have happened.
About the incident,Sachdeva recalls: It was at about ten in the morning when the boy alongwith six to seven others barged into our home and dragged my daughter into the car. I tried to stop them but they pointed a pistol at me. When my wife and other family members tried to intervene,we were all beaten up badly.
The boys then opened fire in the street outside to ensure that no one from the neighbourhood dared to step out. The police was lax even on that day. They came almost an hour late.
Both Sachdeva and his wife have suffered fracture in their arm. The injured are undergoing treatment at Guru Gobind Singh Medical College and Hospital. Meanwhile the police have recovered the car, used for the abduction, from Moga.
They have reportedly also found photographs of the girl and boy from her bedroom though her father denies any knowledge of the girls previous association with Nishan Singh.
