Playing down the threat posed by radicalised Indian youth getting attracted towards the Islamic State (IS), Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar on Thursday said the security agencies have been successful in considerably reducing its influence after proper communication with them.
“I don’t think we should take on them (youngsters) in a big way as they did not act,” he told the media after inaugurating the cable-stayed bridge over river Ravi, connecting the remote Basohli tehsil of Jammu and Kashmir with neighbouring Punjab and Himachal Pradesh.
“We have tried to reduce their influence considerably and have also been successful in it,’’ he said when asked how
big a challenge this is and how the government plans to deal with it.
Parrikar’s comments have come a few days after General Officer Commanding (GOC) of 16 Corps Lt General R R Nimbhorkar had said that radicalisation of youth was a matter of concern and that he had called for analysing the reasons behind it. “And when we analyse what are the reasons for that, then we come to the conclusion of finding a solution that something has to be done,” he said, adding that, “However, I feel that parents, teachers, peers and government agencies, all have to play their roles in ensuring that radicalisation does not take place”.
