In its first major action after taking over the probe into Vyapam scam, the CBI on Thursday carried out 40 searches, including on the premises belonging to former technical education minister Laxmikant Sharma and officials of Madhya Pradesh Professional Examination Board (MPPEB), in Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh.
As many as 23 searches were carried out in Bhopal alone because all top MPPEB officials who have since been arrested lived here. The former minister’s house in Sironj in Vidisha was also searched.
Most of the cases being probed by the Special Task Force (STF) and monitored by the high court-appointed Special Investigation Team (SIT) have been transferred to the central agency that has also registered several preliminary enquiries in connection with the deaths of people linked to the scam.

The properties of mining baron Sudhir Sharma, who is already in jail, and Jagadish Sagar, whose arrest in 2013 exposed the scam, were also searched.
