The Jammu and Kashmir Special Operations Group gunned down two militants after a brief encounter at Sariabal locality in Srinagar late Monday night. The police are now trying to establish whether the two were planning a major strike in the city.
One of the militants was identified as Saifullah, a commander of the Jaish-e-Mohammad. The other is yet to be identified.
The police described the encounter as clean and clinical. During a raid at their rented accommodation, one of the militants was working on his laptop, they added. The duo reportedly rented the house a week ago.
The police said the two militants had told the owner of the house that they were studying at Amar Singh College and had come from North Kashmir.

They were in their early twenties and could be Pakistani nationals, the police said. “We are trying to establish why these militants took rented accommodation and whether they were planning something big,’’ a police officer said.
Locals alleged there was no exchange of fire between the police and militants. The police killed one person inside the house and the other was arrested and later killed near an ATM outside a mosque, they alleged.
The police have been claiming that the Jaish is trying to establish its base in north Kashmir and the city, and some fresh recruits of Jaish had managed to sneak into the Valley in the past few months.
Meanwhile, protests were held at Sariabal against the late-night operation by the police. Shopkeepers downed shutters to protest against the killings.
