Local police kept vigil and preventive action was taken against more than 40 persons from two groups following a dispute over proposed construction of a mosque in a village under Govindpur police station area of Dhanbad district on Thursday. The police registered cross cases following complaints from both the parties.

One Rajan Pandey, a resident of Junglepur, lodged a complaint with Govindpur police on Thursday morning alleging that he was beaten up by masked men when he had gone to answer nature’s call the previous evening. He alleged that the attackers targeted him ‘because he had opposed construction of a mosque’.

The police registered a case, in which Belal Ansari and Ambedin Ansari, besides two others were named. By evening, however, a woman from the other side lodged a complaint accusing five persons, all distantly related to Rajan Pandey, accusing them of using abusive language and resorting to manhandling. A case was registered in this regard too.

The police reached the spot and initiated preventive action. More than two dozen persons from each of the sides have been booked under Section 107 of the Criminal Procedure Code. Sub-Divisional Police Officer (Headquarter-I), Mukesh Kumar, said: “There was a proposal for constructing a mosque on a land belonging to the Muslim community. This is adjacent to the houses of some Brahmin families. A few months ago, there was an understanding that it should be constructed only after clearly ear-marking the boundary. Recently, when the work was about to start, the Brahmin families objected. We were supposed to hold meeting after January 26 in this regard, but it would be advanced now.”

Dhanbad Superintendent of Police Rakesh Bansal said that the issue pertained to an old dispute about land. “There is no law and order situation,” he said.
