Kashmir University students protest against alleged beating of local students at NIT

Scores of students carrying placards took out a solidarity march inside the university campus and denounced the alleged beating of local students and some teachers by the non-local students at NIT.

A day after group clashes broke out between local and non-local engineering students at National Institute of Technology Srinagar over the recent cricket match between India and West Indies, students in the nearby Kashmir University campus staged protest against the incident on Saturday.

Scores of students carrying placards took out a solidarity march inside the university campus and denounced the alleged beating of local students and some teachers by the non-local students at NIT. The engineering students had alleged Kashmiri students chanted anti-India slogans and celebrated India’s loss in the cricket match on Thursday night.

The trouble between the student groups at NIT had continued on Friday with local students hoisting green flags and non-locals on the other side flying the tri-color to protest the celebrations over India’s loss by locals. College authorities closed the campus till Monday following the protests.

The students of Kashmir University protesting the Friday’s incident at NIT Srinagar also shouted pro-freedom slogans and demanded action against students who allegedly damaged the college property at NIT.

Students were also seen carrying placards that had “No IIT. No IIM. Only Freedom” written on them. Meanwhile, police said that normalcy has been restored at the NIT campus and there is every likelihood that the institute will be opened on Monday.
