Karnataka Governor Vaju Vala came down heavily on “exorbitant” fees and donations charged by private education institutes even as Gujarat Education Minister Bhupendrasinh Chudasama said that the government will address the issue.
“If one wants to become an MD (master of medicine), he has to pay donations ranging from Rs1 crore to Rs5 crore. One gets admission only if such donations are made. How to arrange for such amounts? Universities, Central government and state governments will have to think over this,” Vala said at a function on the campus of Saurashtra University in Rajkot.

The Karnataka governor, who is a native of Rajkot, was speaking at the inaugural ceremony marking the beginning of year-long celebrations of golden jubilee of Saurashtra University (SU). Vala also inaugurate newly-constructed buildings for department of physical education and department of education of SU.
Vala also stated that students committing suicides reflected lack of self-confidence among them and that it was a matter of concern for teachers and parents. He asked society to introspect over the issue.
Bhupendrasinh Chudasama was also sitting on the dais when Vala made the comments. Later talking to reporter, Chudasama said state government would take action. “We are seized of the matter. We are thinking of issuing a circular and thereby allow any fee hike only after consultation with parents associations,” said Chudasama.
Incidentally, private medical and engineeging collages in the state are allowed to keep some seats reserved under management quota. They seek donations from students for admissions against such quotas.
Saurashtra University, the largest in the state in terms of geographical area it serves, is celebrating its golden jubilee this year. It is the only “A’ grade university in Gujarat.
