Health ministry to send team to assess situation

With the Chief Secretary of flood-hit Tamil Nadu informing the Centre Saturday that a massive clean-up operation was being undertaken to prevent epidemic and spread of diseases, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has decided to send a high-level team to assess the situation in the state and provide help.

The National Crisis Management Committee (NCMC) met Saturday under the chairmanship of Cabinet Secretary P K Sinha to review the flood situation. With telecom services not fully functional, the Cabinet Secretary directed that necessary steps be taken to restore them. The Tamil Nadu government, meanwhile, was scheduled to hold a meeting Saturday with telecom service providers to sort out the issues. The Ministry of Petroleum has also been directed to facilitate availability of petroleum, oil and lubricant (POL) products.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has suggested that the Tamil Nadu government take steps to mark HFL (High Flood Level) in all places, which can be of help in such a situation in the future.
