The Gujarat High Court on Wednesday issued notices to state and central governments as well as the developer of location-based augmented reality game “Pokemon Go” on a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) alleging that the game hurts religious sentiments of certain communities by showing eggs in places of worship.
The division bench led by chief justice R Subhash Reddy admitted the PIL and issued notices to state and central governments and also San Francisco-based developer of the game, Niantic, Inc. The court also allowed the petitioner’s lawyer to issue notice to the foreign company through email, besides normal procedure.
The petitioner’s lawyer Nachiket Dave said that “this game hurts religious sentiments of Hindus and various other religions since eggs are depicted at temples and other houses of prayers belonging to several religions. I moved the PIL to know what is the intention of this gaming company.”
He said that the image of eggs are shown in the game that appear in places of worships. He said that eggs are considered as non-vegetarian food and it is blasphemous to carry non-vegetarian food inside the temple or any other place of worship among Hindus, Jains and various other religions.
The PIL also questions the game saying that it infringes upon the privacy of individuals and poses threat of life to the players, who have to walk around to score a point.
