FOUR more Dalits attempted suicide in Gujarat on Friday to protest the flogging on July 11 of a group of Dalit youths at Una by “gau rakshaks” for skinning dead cattle. Since last Monday, at least 22 Dalit youths have attempted to commit suicide over the incident as protests continued across the state.

Three Dalit men, who allegedly consumed poison in the afternoon at Ranpur in Botad district, were rushed to a local hospital and referred to Bhavnagar for further treatment. Police identified the three as Pankaj Makwana (20), Ravi Tidiya (22) and Ramesh Parmar (24).

Police in Porbandar reported the other suicide bid. Mahesh Chavda (30), a resident of the Milpara area, consumed poison at his home after watching a video of the assault in Una, said police. He was admitted to the local government hospital where his condition is said to be stable.

So far, more than 20 youths have attempted suicide during the ongoing protest.

Members of Congress party blocked a national highway in Vadodara by burning tyres that caused traffic jam. Police managed to clear the road and detained five persons in this connection.
