Vehemently condemning the arrest of the Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti (PAAS) leader Hardik Patel and levelling charges of treason against him and his colleagues, Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) on Saturday said that the action of the state government amounted to stifling the voices of democracy and violating the provisions of the freedom of conscience given to the citizens under the Constitution.

Addressing media persons, Leader of Opposition in the state assembly Shankersinh Vaghela said that in fact, the charges of treason should have levelled against Prime Minister Narendra Modi when he had referred to Newtonian theory of equal and opposite reaction to every action in the context of post-Godhra violence.
“The case of treason against young Hardik Patel indicates the pervert mentality of the state to throttle democracy and suppress the voice of the youths”, commented Vaghela.
“We strongly condemn it”, the Congress leader said.
Strongly supporting Hardik Patel over his demand for reservation, GPCC president Bharatsinh Solanki said that his party was in favour of reservation on basis of economic position of the families and a resolution to this effect was passed by the state unit of the party on October 1 this year. He said that his party would move a bill in the forthcoming session of the state assembly demanding 15-20 per cent of reservation for economically poor people from all castes, without disturbing the existing 50 per cent quota for SCs, STS, OBCs and others.
