Union Food Minister Ram Vilas Paswan Friday said a central team will be sent to Bundelkhand to conduct inquiries into the alleged death of a Dalit man due to hunger in Uttar Pradesh’s Banda district.
After the issue of the alleged death was raised in Rajya Sabha by BJP member Prabhat Jha during Zero Hour, Paswan said the Food Security Act has been implemented across the country, except in the two poll-bound states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
When 100 per cent foodgrain is lifted for distribution at subsidised rates, how can a person die of hunger, Paswan asked. “We will send a team,” he said, adding that the team would probe how long the victim’s family was not being given foodgrain.

Raising the issue earlier, Jha said Kanhaiya, a Dalit, died of hunger in Banda district and police were trying to hush up the case. “Why is no one shedding tears on his death,” he asked.
According to Jha, Kanhaiya’s wife Muni Devi had claimed that her husband died of hunger and that the family was pressured to complete his last rites.
BSP leader Mayawati said Kanhaiya’s case was not an isolated incident. She claimed several others had died of hunger in the Bundelkhand region. The Centre should send a team there, she demanded.
