Cauvery water dispute: What happened in Bengaluru today

Security was tightened across the city following the violence and section 144 was imposed as a preventive measure.

The apex court has now directed Karnataka government to release 12,000 cusecs of water everyday to its neighboring state for a period of 10 days. But pro-Kannada activists protested the decision saying the state has just enough water in its Cauvery reservoirs for its own drinking and irrigation needs.

At 5.00 pm: At Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah writes to the CM of Tamil Nadu Jayalalithaa over violent protests

At 5.45 pm: At Stones pelted at lorries bearing Tamil Nadu registration number near Hubli Bypass. No injuries reported.

At 4.25 pm: Bengaluru Police issue statement saying, “We urge to all Bengalurians to not pay heed to rumours. Stay calm and do not panic.”

The Cauvery basin covers a large expanse of land including major chunks in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu and also smaller areas in Kerala and Puducherry. In 2012, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, as chairman of Cauvery River Authority, directed the Karnataka government to release 9,000 cusecs of water daily.

But with the Karnataka government continuously failing to release the water to Tamil Nadu, Chief Minister Jayalithaa filed an interlocutory petition in the Supreme Court in August, 2016 seeking the release of water as per guidelines of Cauvery Tribunal.
