Karnataka Chief Minister K Siddaramaiah Monday wrote to his counter part in Tamil Nadu, Jayalalithaa, requesting her to ensure the safety and protection of the Kannada speaking people living in the neighbouring state as violence erupted in both states over the Cauvery dispute.
Saying that his government is firmly committed to maintaining the law and order of the state, Siddaramaiah wrote that authorities have taken utmost precaution to ensure the safety and protection of people, particularly those from Tamil Nadu.
The chief minister added that an incident involving an engineering college student from Tamil Nadu being roughed up by pro-Kannada activists in Bengaluru has been blown out of proportion by Tamil media channels. This incident is likely to incite passions and violence against Kannada speaking people in Tamil Nadu, he said.
“The Bengaluru City Police has already filed a case in the incident and investigation is under progress,” Siddaramaiah said.He also urged Tamil Nadu authorities to ensure that perpetrators of violence are immediately brought to book and provide adequate security to Kannada speaking people in the state.

Earlier today, Siddaramaiah appealed for peace as violence erupted in parts of Bengaluru and Mysuru after petrol bombs were hurled at a hotel run by a Kannada native in Tamil Nadu. Pro-Kannada activists burnt vehicles and pelted stones at shops and bus and metro services were briefly suspended. The situation returned to normal after Bengaluru Police cracked down on the protests and detained several activists.
