Both mainstream and separatists leaders in Jammu and Kashmir have expressed concern over the alleged harassment faced by Kashmiri youth studying outside the state.
Former CM Omar Abdullah sought Rajasthan CM Vasundhara Raje’s intervention after four Kashmiri students of Mewar University were arrested, a day after some local residents alleged that they cooked beef in their hostel room.

Earlier, Omar had shot off a similar tweet to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in the wake of reports that the Home Ministry had asked for details of Kashmiri students in Kolkata’s colleges.
M Y Tarigami, CPM MLA from Kulgam, said the Kashmir youth are already in despair due to rising unemployment, limited business opportunities and government apathy and added, “the witchhunting by police and administrative authorities of educational institutions outside J&K will only add to their demoralisation and alienation’’.
The Hurriyat Conference, too, condemned the arrest of the Kashmiri students in Rajasthan.
“In the past too, Kashmiri students have been targeted by local students and extremist groups at various educational institutions across India… many Kashmiri students had to leave their studies midway…” said Hurriyat chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq.
