Active Covid-19 cases in India rise to 7,026; country reports 5 deaths

With 1,134 new cases, India’s total number of active Covid-19 cases rose to 7,026 on Wednesday, according to data provided by the Union Health Ministry.

According to the data, the country on Tuesday recorded five deaths in Chhattisgarh, Delhi, Gujarat and Maharashtra and Kerala. The total death toll climbed to 5,30,813.

The daily positivity rate was pegged at 1.09 per cent while the weekly positivity was 0.98 per cent.  The total Covid case tally was recorded at 4.46 crore (4,46,98,118).

With the rise in the total number of active cases, it now comprises 0.02 per cent of the total infections. According to the ministry, the national Covid-19 recovery rate is 98.79 per cent.

So far, a total of 92.05 crore tests have been conducted with 1,03,831 being undertaken in the last 24 hours.

A total of 4,41,60,279 individuals have recovered from the illness, while the case fatality rate was recorded at 1.19 per cent.

India has so far administered a total of 220.65 crore doses of Covid vaccine as per the ministry’s website.

On May 13, 2020, the Delhi Cabinet had decided that if any person, “including doctor, nurse, paramedical staff, security/sanitation staff or any other govt officer/official including police officer/official, whether temporary or permanent employee or contractual”, in any government department or from the private sector deployed for Covid duties by the Delhi government “expires by contracting the disease during discharge of his duties, his/her family shall be paid an ex gratia of amount one crore, posthumously”.

🔴 In our Opinion section, Rajib Dasgupta writes: The recent rise in Covid-19 cases reminds us that the pandemic is not yet over. It has added some more concern to the ongoing influenza outbreaks. This current landscape of Covid-19 is layered with a huge surge of H3N2 Influenza A cases, with at least nine reported deaths. It is in this context that India, representing the Global South, is expected to play a role in integrating equity considerations in the ongoing negotiations.

🔴 The poly-herbal Ayurvedic drug Ayush 64 that was repurposed for use during the Covid-19 pandemic has been found to be well-tolerated and safe, a new study in the PLOS One journal has said. The study published on March 16 said the drug, in combination with the standard of care (SOC), hastened recovery, reduced hospitalisation, and improved health among Covid-19 cases.
