Total train coaches 2025 data: Indian Railways (IR) has constantly catering to serve the travelling needs of all sections of society by offering a variety of coach types, including both AC and non-AC options. However, the seating or berth capacity varies depending on the category of coaches such as General, Chair Car, Sleeper, Non-AC, or AC.

Indian Railways is considered to be one of the world’s largest employers. It plays a crucial role in the nation’s transport infrastructure. But have you ever wondered how many passenger coaches are currently operational in India?

In a written reply to Rajya Sabha on Friday (July 25, 2025), Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw revealed that the total number of passenger coaches in the country stands at 82,200. Of these, 57,200 are non-AC coaches, while the remaining 25,000 are AC coaches. This means that nearly 70% of all passenger coaches are non-AC, catering primarily to general class and affordable travel segments.

Distribution of coaches:

Non-AC coaches (general and sleeper) 57,200 70%

Vaishnaw was responding to a question raised by Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Sant Balbir Singh in the upper house of the Parliament. The minister highlighted that Railways have significantly increased the facilities for passengers demanding general class travel.

“During the last financial year 2024-25 alone, 1250 general coaches have been utilised in various long-distance trains,” the Union Minister added. He also stated that number of seats available for non-AC passengers has  increased over the years.

Distribution of seats:

Non-AC seats 54 lakhs 78%
AC seats 15 lakhs 22%
Total 69 lakhs 100%

“Over and above the current high share of non-AC coaches (~70% of total coaches), Railways is executing a special manufacturing programme for 17,000 non-AC general/sleeper coaches over the next 5 years,” Vaishnaw said.
