The Assam Congress has trained its guns on Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in singer Zubeen Garg death case in Singapore. Assam Congress President Gaurav Gogoi implied that the CM was trying to shield the two prime suspects in the case due to their purported “proximity to the BJP”.
Zubeen Garg died on September 19 in Singapore, where he was to perform at the North East India Festival. There have been no revelation of foul play in the two autopsies of Garg — one in Singapore and the other in Assam. However, there have been allegations from several quarters that multiple people, including Zubeen Garg’s manager Sidhartha Sharma and the organiser of the festival Shyamkanu Mahanta.
While nearly 60 FIRs have been lodged in the case, the prime suspects are yet to be questioned by the police, said Gaurav Gogoi.
Gaurav Gogoi, who is also a Lok Sabha MP, said, “The role of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is highly suspicious. Ten days have passed [since Zubeen’s death], we still don’t know where his manager is and where the main event [NE Fest] organiser is. These 2 people have the most intimate knowledge of the last few hours leading up to the death Zubeen Garg’s death.”
He alleged that Assam Police is beating up people demanding “justice”, but are giving the two prime suspects leeway. questioning other people…”
Shyamkanu is the younger brother of the chief information commissioner of the Assam State Information Commission and former DGP, Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta. His has another brother, Nani Gopal Mahanta, who was the education advisor to CM Himanta Biswa Sarma. He then went on to take over as the vice-chancellor of Gauhati University.
“The chief minister has said he is allowing them till October 6 to appear before the police. Why this VIP treatment? Is it because the manager has close links to the BJP…? Or is it because Shyamkanu Mahanta has very close ties with BJP ministers in Delhi and Dispur? His major events have only been attended by high-profile BJP ministers and NDA chief ministers.”
