A senior officer of the Goa Police has appealed to people, especially senior citizens, to avoid going for a morning walk on Monday (January 1) due to the possibility of accidents on account of rash driving by revellers.
DSP Salim Shaikh, sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) Vasco, said, “…There are chances of rash and negligent driving due to the possibility of people consuming alcohol in view of New Year celebrations. Police will be deployed on beaches and roads. We are geared up from our side and I want to warn motorists that they will face strict action if found driving under the influence of alcohol. Action shall be taken under provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act.”
“We also request locals to avoid taking their morning walks on the road on January 1 since there may be some persons, who may be drunk or half asleep while driving since many of them party all night. We appeal to people to strictly use footpaths in case they want to go for a walk, but if possible, avoid taking morning walks on the main road,” he said.
The police officer said nearly 250 police personnel will be deployed across Mormugao taluka in Vasco for patrolling and to check drunken driving violations on New Year’s eve.
