Four suspected members of an armed gang were shot dead by police in an encounter on Sunday morning in Assam’s Goalpara district, officials said, adding that their identities were still being ascertained.
The incident took place in the Dhupdhara region of western Assam’s Goalpara district, according to the police.
Nabaneet Mahanta, Senior Superintendent of Police, Goalpara, said that the district police had set up barricades for checking vehicles after receiving inputs about armed gangsters moving around the area.
“For quite a few days, there was information that some criminal gang with arms has been on the move in the area at the border of Assam and Meghalaya. On the basis of that, we have been carrying out operations for the last some days. This morning we got input that this team is moving towards this side with the intent of a kidnapping attempt,” he said.
Mahanta stated that the police opened fire in retaliation after the gangsters fired at a checking party.
“They were moving towards here in a vehicle. When they saw the police party here, at first they tried to go back and when they saw they couldn’t, they fired at the police party. In retaliation and in self-defence our party fired at them. After that when we searched the vehicle, we found four injured people inside and we shifted them to a hospital where the doctor declared them dead,” he said.
Mahanta further stated that four pistols were recovered from the gangsters’ vehicle.
