After ruling for more than 16 years, Sheikh Hasina was forced out of power — and Bangladesh — on August 5 by a massive popular uprising.
In the chaos, there were targeted attacks against leaders and supporters of the Awami League, and members of the Hindu minority. This put the country in a state of chaos and political crisis, after which the Army-backed interim government stepped in to normalise the situation.
The lack of a strong and stable government led to people taking the law into their hands, and there were targeted attacks against those associated with the previous regime, which included political leaders, ministers, journalists, activists and intellectuals aligned with the ousted Hasina government. Minorities including Hindus have also come under attack.
As the Army-backed interim government finds its feet, demands have begun for the return of Hasina, who is currently sheltering in India.
What went wrong with the Awami League government? How did a student protest against job quotas end with a regime change? Why are Hindus being targeted in Bangladesh? And what happens now — for Bangladesh and Hasina, and in India-Bangladesh relations?
To answer and explain some of these questions, Pinak Ranjan Chakravarty, former Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh, will be the guest on Friday at
6 pm on August 30 at a session of Explained.Live titled “What after Hasina in Bangladesh”.
He will be in conversation with Shubhajit Roy, Diplomatic Editor of The Indian Express.
A former member of the Indian Foreign Service (1977 batch), Pinak Ranjan Chakravarty honed his expertise on Bangladesh over two stints — as Deputy High Commissioner of Bangladesh (1999-2002) and later as High Commissioner (2007-2009). In February 2024, he published a book on India-Bangladesh relations, titled Transformation: Emergence of Bangladesh and Evolution of India-Bangladesh ties.
Explained.Live is a series of explanatory conversations that The Indian Express hosts.
