Sandip Ghosh, suspended former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, where a traineer doctor was found allegedly raped and murdered on August 9, moved the Supreme Court on Wednesday challenging the Calcutta High Court order transferring the investigation into alleged financial irregularities at the institute during his tenure, to the CBI.

In his plea, Ghosh is learnt to have contended that the high court transferred the probe without providing him adequate opportunity to be heard.

The matter is likely to be taken up by the top court on September 6.

The Mamata Banerjee-led government had earlier set up a Special Investigation Team to probe the alleged corruption at the hospital since January 2021, a period that corresponds with the tenure of Ghosh.

However, former deputy superintendent of the hospital, Akhtar Ali, moved the court seeking a probe by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) accusing Ghosh of embezzlement of government funds, trafficking of biomedical waste, nepotism and violation of procurement laws.

Hearing the plea, the HC directed the CB,I which is already investigating the alleged rape and murder case, to also take over the corruption probe against Ghosh.

The HC also asked the CBI to submit a report about the probe in three weeks.
