How accurate were the Exit Polls in 2014 and 2009?
In 2014, an average of eight exit polls estimated the BJP-led NDA winning 283 seats and the Congress-led UPA 105 seats. However, courtesy the ‘Modi wave’, the NDA ended up winning 336 seats and the UPA with a mere 60. Of these, the BJP won 282 and the Congress 44. In 2009, when the UPA came back to power, an average of four exit polls underestimated the tally of the winner. They gave 195 seats to the UPA and 185 to the NDA. The UPA had finally won 262 seats, compared to the NDA’s 158. Of these, the Congress won 206 seats and the BJP 116.

We have numbers to form next govt: Amit Shah
Maintaining that “we are in a comfortable position” and “already have the numbers” to form the next government, BJP leader and Union Home Minister Amit Shah has said while he agrees that a strong Opposition is good for democracy, “it’s the janata (people) who will decide that” and it cannot be determined by the wishes of a section. Shah made these remarks in an interview with The Indian Express at his residence in New Delhi, shortly after polling ended for the sixth phase of the elections – the seventh and last phase is on June 1.
What BJP did differently this Lok Sabha polls
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s third Lok Sabha campaign saw some new themes being deployed, even as much of the hectic campaign style of the BJP under him remained the same throughout the gruelling 40-day-long cycle. As always, he led from the front. If Congress manifesto became a target after the party claimed a new BJP government would target the Constitution, the Insta reels comprised videos of Modi directly addressing select people at his rallies. The small meetings involved BJP's Rajya Sabha MPs, plus those who could not get Lok Sabha tickets. Read More
Sharad Pawar on future of regional parties
Suggesting a possible reshaping of Opposition politics after the 2024 elections, Sharad Pawar has said that regional parties will move closer or, in some cases, even merge with the Congress. Among the tallest leaders in the Opposition today, the former Union Minister and Maharashtra Chief Minister Pawar told The Indian Express: “In the next couple of years, several regional parties will associate more closely with the Congress. Or they may look at the option of merging with the Congress if they believe that is the best for their party.”
Asked whether that applied to his own party, the NCP, the chief of the NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar) said, “I don’t see any difference between the Congress and us….Ideologically, we belong to the Gandhi, Nehru line of thinking.” Read the full interview.
Uddhav Thackeray: ‘Fadnavis made me look like a liar’
Maharashtra is a critical piece of the election puzzle this time — since the last Lok Sabha election of 2019, the traditional “communal vs secular” battlelines have been rearranged beyond recognition, after Shiv Sena and NCP splintered, and both government and Opposition were reconstituted. On the Opposition side, an unlikely alliance has taken shape — between Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT) led by Uddhav Thackeray and the NCP (SP) led by Sharad Pawar. At Matoshri in the leafy Mumbai enclave of Kalanagar, The Indian Express caught up with Uddhav Thackeray, the man who is most in the spotlight. Read his full interview.

While most exit polls at the national level on Saturday predicted that the BJP would finally open its account in Kerala in Lok Sabha elections, with some even going on to say the party would get up to three seats, a local exit poll that came out on Sunday said it would not win any of the 20 constituencies in the southern state. Exit polls will go wrong like they did during Assembly election: Deputy CM Shivakumar
Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar reiterated that the exit polls would go wrong like they did during the Karnataka Assembly elections last year.
He said, “Exit polls had predicted that Congress party would not come to power during the last Assembly elections, but they were wrong." Shivakumar, who is also the Karnataka Congress president, said the exit polls had indicated that the Congress would win only about 80-85 seats, but he had predicted that his party would bag 136 seats on the basis of the internal survey of the party.
Eventually Congress won 136 seats.
Congress' state leaders confident of much better returns for party than projected in exit polls
Congress leaders from some politically crucial states exuded confidence that the party will do much better than what was projected in the exit polls and asserted the INDIA bloc is going to form the next government.
Leaders from states such as Karnataka, Maharashtra, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Jharkhand, Assam, Himachal Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan and Gujarat stressed that the Congress' performance would be very good, belying all the predictions in the exit polls. It's 'Modi media poll', INDIA bloc will get 295 seats: Rahul Gandhi on exit polls
Terming the exit polls "bogus", the Congress said they were a "deliberate attempt to justify rigging" of the elections and part of "psychological games" being played by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to lower the morale of the INDIA bloc workers.
Former Congress president Rahul Gandhi dubbed the exit polls as "Modi media poll". "This is not called an exit poll but its name is 'Modi media poll'. This is Modi ji's poll, it is his fantasy poll," Gandhi told reporters at the AICC headquarters here after a meeting with party's Lok Sabha MPs via video conference.
Asked how many seats the INDIA bloc will get, Gandhi said, "Have you heard Sidhu Moose Wala's song '295'? So 295 (seats)."
Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh also hit out at Prime Minister Modi for holding several meetings, including a long brainstorming session to review the 100-day agenda of the "new government", saying these were "pressure tactics" to send out a signal to the bureaucracy and the administrative structure that he is coming back.
Exit polls and results day: Why BJP may have reason to worry, and where INDIA may have fallen short
The exit polls announced late last evening after the end of the seventh and last phase of polling of India’s 18th general elections have left the supporters of the right-wing jubilant (the BJP-led NDA is projected to win 360-plus seats), the borderline neutral variety bewildered, and the Opposition stunned. For the latter, it was like the anaesthetic spray given by a determined dentist before a tooth extraction. The palliative is just a temporary respite; June 4, 2024, could be a hard punch on the jaw, demanding wholesale mouth surgery. Or maybe not.
After all, an exit poll can also be just another statistical misadventure given its rather questionable track record, no matter how assiduously marketed by hyper-cacophonous TV channels. But is India seriously contemplating Modi 3.0, the popular acronym capturing the rise, rise and rise of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, or can we still potentially see an extraordinary capitulation of the BJP, reducing it to below the halfway mark of 272, as has been frequently emphasised by some psephologists? We will know on Tuesday. Read the full story by Sanjay Jha here

Exit Poll Results 2024 Live, Lok Sabha Election: Punjab exit polls predict most seats to INDIA bloc, major gain for BJP
Continuing with the trend that it has adopted over the last six general elections, where Punjab preferred the party which has ended up in the Opposition benches, the state looks set to give most seats to the INDIA bloc, according to exit polls.
Nearly all major exit polls also projected a big gain for the Bharatiya Janata Party in the state, where the party is going solo for the first time since 1996 and is contesting all the seats, instead of the three that it used to fight in alliance with the Shiromani Akali Dal.
According to the Axis MyIndia TV Today poll survey, the BJP may get between 2-4 seats, INDIA bloc 7-9 seats and AAP between 0-2 seats in Punjab. On exit polls, AAP MP Sanjay Singh said, "This exit poll has been prepared in the BJP office... Who will believe that BJP is getting a 34% vote share in Tamil Nadu? Who will believe that AAP is winning 0-2 seats in Punjab? The 'Janta ka exit poll' based on the figures shared by INDIA alliance leaders in today's meeting says that we will win more than 295 seats... I am surprised that only 400 seats are to the BJP (in the exit polls). They could have given 700, which could have been possible from 'Akhand Bharat'. The BJP has done a huge 'hera pheri' (foul play) and to hide that, such numbers are shown in the exit polls."

Exit Poll Results 2024 Live, Lok Sabha Election | Guru Prakash writes: With exit poll results and BJP’s return, a message
With the exit polls predicting a remarkable third term for Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the subsequent weeks will witness loud discourse about the “integrity of public institutions”. The Congress party, which reflected zero depth and a lack of vision, will target the electoral process, the media and even the average Indian voter. Instead of introspecting, it will focus on finding a scapegoat and fixing the blame for its third consecutive defeat in the national elections.
The 2024 general election and the exit poll results offer three important takeaways. Significantly, the political vocabulary of the country under PM Modi and the BJP has undergone a fundamental transformation. Read more
Exit Poll Results 2024 Live, Lok Sabha Election: Lead for Mahayuti but BJP-led NDA unlikely to repeat 2019 in Maharashra
Most exit poll surveys on the Lok Sabha elections have predicted a significant decline in seats for the BJP-led ruling NDA alliance in Maharashtra with most pollsters giving the BJP-led ruling alliance between 22 and 33 seats.
Even as most exit poll surveys have predicted a lead for the Mahayuti, the ruling alliance comprising the BJP, Shiv Sena led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and NCP (Ajit Pawar) in Maharashtra, the surveys have hinted that the ruling alliance is not likely to achieve its thumping victory during the 2019 Lok Sabha polls when the BJP, in an alliance with the undivided Shiv Sena, had won 41 out of the 48 seats in the state.
Almost all the exit polls show that neither the ruling nor the opposition alliance will cross the 33-seat mark and that neither side is poised for a clean sweep. Read more here

Exit Poll Results 2024 Live, Lok Sabha Election: For BJP, the best tidings are from South
Tamil Nadu: While overall the exit polls indicate a big lead for the DMK-led INDIA alliance in Tamil Nadu, giving it 33-39 seats out of the total 39 – which was anticipated – they give four-odd seats to the BJP. The national party had not won a single seat in Tamil Nadu in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, which had been swep
Karnataka: Karnataka could hold a surprise if the BJP repeats its 2019 dominance, when it won 27 of the 28 seats, given the size of the Congress victory in the state Assembly elections last year. The average of the exit polls suggested 23 seats for the BJP, indicating that the party gained from its alliance with the JD(S) ahead of the polls.
Telangana: Even Telangana would be a surprise, if the exit polls hold true, given that the BJP has never been a major player here, and the Congress is the ruling party. While the main Opposition party, Bharat Rashtra Samithi, has been on the decline, the exit polls predict far sharper gains for the BJP due to this than anticipated, placing it neck-and-neck with the Congress in the state, which has 17 Lok Sabha seats. In 2019, the NDA had got 4 seats in Telangana, with the rest going to INDIA parties and others.
Andhra Pradesh: In Andhra Pradesh, which saw simultaneous Lok Sabha and Assembly elections, the exit polls anticipate a sweeping NDA victory. The TDP-Jana Sena Party, boosted by an alliance with the BJP, was seen as making big gains in the state, and the exit polls gave the NDA up to 22 seats, if not more, out of 25.

Rubbishing the exit polls, Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate told The Indian Express: “This is a government poll meant to please Mr Modi. The janata ka exit poll is out. We have already said we are winning 295 seats. The BJP is at 220 and the NDA is at 235.
