The District and Sessions Court of Gurgaon has ordered the deployment of 11 Duty Magistrates across the city to ensure the maintenance of law and order on the occasion of Eid tomorrow. The directions will come into effect from today.

The move comes more than an year after a group of six men disrupted namaz at an empty plot in the city. A case was registered against the accused – all residents of Wazirabad and Kanhai villages. Several outfits had staged protest, demanding that a case registered against those men be withdrawn and also a city-wide ban on reading nazam in the open. The accused were granted bail shortly.

People threatened to take to the streets to ensure prayers were no longer held in the open. A letter, addressed to Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, was submitted which alleged that the Friday prayers in Sector 53 were being used as a pretext to occupy land illegally and that worshippers used to chant anti-India and pro-Pakistan slogans at the spot.

“For the last one-and-a-half months, a group of men have been reading namaz on the land of Wazirabad, Gurgaon, with the intention of occupying it illegally. The environment there is being ruined by chanting slogans of ‘Pakistan zindabad’ and “Hindustan murdabad. When some patriotic youth stopped them from doing this, police conducted a one-sided investigation. Does chanting ‘Vande Matram’ and ‘Jai Shri Ram’ come in the ambit of offence that the youth were arrested?” the letter read.

However, the people who prayed at the spot refuted these allegations.
