With admission season set to begin tomorrow, the DU administration wants to ensure the campus is safe for the large number of students flocking it and that no untoward cases like molestation or chain snatching are reported.
Thousands of students are expected to descend upon the Delhi University campus over the next 15 days and varsity officials say law and order is one of their priorities.
In collaboration with Delhi police,we have taken several steps to ensure that no untoward cases are reported, Dean,Students Welfare,S K Vij said.
He said requisite measures will be taken by security personnel to ensure the admission process is smooth as always.
The University campus spread across North and South Delhi will see security personnel in plain clothes deployed to monitor all areas while mobile pickets will also be in place.
The police will be active. We do not want any instances of molestation of women candidates or cases of chain snatching at the campus, he said.
He said if need arises, the administration will also install CCTV cameras at places that it feels are sensitive.
Officials said though cases of molestation during the time of admissions are rarely reported, the administration does not want to take any chances with security and the students should in no case feel insecure.
With heat at its peak, the administration is also advising students to take all requisite precautions and not to be in a hurry to submit forms.
They have two weeks at hand to submit forms. Given the extreme heat conditions,we advise them to wait for some time for the weather to be better, Vij said.
Moreover, the students should also be careful to carry enough water with them as well as umbrellas and sunglasses.
They should not suffer heat strokes. They should also wear clothes protective enough against the sun, Vij added.
The process of admissions for the 54,000 seats in the Universitys colleges is set to begin tomorrow and the last date of sale of forms and the deadline for submission of completed application forms is June 11.
The University has added 5,000 seats to its last years kitty of 49,000 this year, completing the process of implementation of the 27 per cent OBC quota.
The Proctorial Board met concerned University and police officials on Monday to discuss security and related arrangements for the smooth conduct of admissions.
The Centres in-charge have been asked to keep in touch with the Station House Officers of their respective areas to make sure that security arrangements are satisfactory.
Police pickets would also be strengthened at all womens hostels, the University has said.
The first admission list will be out on June 22 and three subsequent cut-off lists will follow on June 26,July 1 and July 6. The forms will be available across 16 centres in the capital.
The University helplines put in place to help students sort out their queries have been ringing non-stop since the CBSE results were announced.
Four phone lines — two each in the North and South campuses — are currently operational as helplines.
Though we dont have a record as such, one of the lines did report as many as 700 calls on one particular day, a University official said.
While hundreds of calls are answered on phone lines, the web chat that DU has introduced this time has also been a hit. Under this students are allowed to interact with experts online who answer their queries on admissions.
In some instances, over 500 questions have been asked in one hour at the web chat. It being difficult to answer all of these,we posted the responses on the websites later, the official said.
