Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s US visit next week, the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) Thursday approved the procurement of armed Predator Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) from General Atomics, it is learnt.

The procurement of the drones was cleared at a meeting of the DAC chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, according to a PTI report. The deal now awaits the final nod from the Cabinet Committee on Security.

There could be a possible announcement of the deal following talks between Modi and US President Joe Biden at the White House next week.

Sources said around 31 UAVs could be procured — around 15 for the Navy and the rest divided between the Army and the Indian Air Force (IAF) — at an estimated cost of around $3 billion. This will include maintenance, overhaul and repair (MRO) of the UAVs.
