Cyclone Montha LIVE Tracker: Cyclone Montha intensified into a severe cyclonic storm over the Bay of Bengal early Tuesday and is expected to make landfall near Kakinada in Andhra Pradesh later tonight, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said. Heavy rain and strong winds have been reported across coastal Andhra and southern Odisha.
Andhra Pradesh and Odisha are on high alert and the administration in coastal areas have started evacuations in the coastal areas. Fishermen have been asked not to venture out into open seas till the cyclonic storm, ‘Montha’, passes over.

Here’s all you need to know about the movement and path of Cyclone Montha:
1. Storm movement: Cyclonic storm Montha over the westcentral Bay of Bengal moved north-northwestwards at around 15 kmph in the past six hours and intensified into a severe cyclonic storm by 5.30 am on Tuesday, according to the IMD.
2. Landfall zone: The system is expected to cross the Andhra Pradesh coast between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam, near Kakinada, late Tuesday evening or night.
3. Current position: At 5.30 am, the cyclone was located 190 km south-southeast of Machilipatnam, 270 km south-southeast of Kakinada, and 340 km south-southeast of Visakhapatnam.
4. Name meaning: The name Montha, suggested by Thailand, means a fragrant flower.
5. Rainfall forecast: The IMD has forecast extremely heavy rainfall in isolated areas of coastal Andhra districts and issued a red alert for 19 districts.
6. IMD issues alerts: Orange alerts have been issued for Nandyal, Kadapa and Annamayya districts, while yellow alerts cover Kurnool, Anantapur, Sri Sathya Sai and Chittoor districts.
7. Preparations: The Andhra Pradesh government has set up 3,174 rehabilitation centres staffed by 3,778 secretaries. The highest number are in Dr BR Ambedkar Konaseema (650), followed by Bapatla (481) and East Godavari (376).
