The CBI is learnt to have told a Parliamentary panel that it does not have consent to investigate cases in several states, which makes it challenging for the agency to probe cyber crime cases.

The CBI officials were among those called to a meet Thursday of the Standing Committee on Home Affairs, headed by BJP Rajya Sabha member Radha Mohan Das Agrawal.

The agenda of the meet was to hear ministries and organisations on ‘Cyber Crime – Ramifications, Protection and Prevention’.

Others called by the panel were officials from the Ministry of External Affairs, Ministry of Corporate Affairs, Financial Intelligence Unit-India and the NIA.

It is learnt that the MEA officials pointed out that cyber crimes are also committed from foreign countries. They mentioned the process for extradition of persons accused of cyber crimes.

The NIA is learnt to have said it is currently investigating five cyber crime cases.
