Days after he took charge as SHO, Malviya Nagar, on January 16, 2013, Pal started a crackdown on African nationals residing without proper documents
According to figures available with the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO), a total of 735 people, including 636 Nigerian nationals, were deported from Delhi in 2013. Of these, 400 Nigerian nationals were from Malviya Nagar.
In contrast, less than 50 Nigerians were deported in 2012, when the total deportations from Delhi added up to only 106.
Police sources said in many cases, action was taken after they received complaints of scuffles or quarrels involving Nigerians. “We verified the papers of the Nigerian nationals and whenever we found they were overstaying their visa or did not have the requisite papers, the FRRO officials were informed,” said a police official from the Malviya Nagar police station.
Moreover, while Bharti alleged that African nationals are running a drugs racket in Khirki Extension area of Malviya Nagar, the records show that of the total 24 Nigerian nationals who were arrested in the city under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act in 2013, most were from West Delhi and other parts of South Delhi.
