Dozens get relief from court in Kishtwar violence case

In August,Kishtwar had gone up in flames,about 60 people were injured and property destroyed.

Except for two people arrested for murder,all the nearly two dozen people booked for arson and looting during violence that erupted on Eid in Kishtwar in August this year,were bailed out by the Principal District Sessions Judge,Kishtwar.

Giving details,Amees Ahmed Mir,advocate who appeared for some of the accused in the case,said that Principal District Sessions Judge Pawan Dev Kotwal ordered their release subject to their furnishing bail bond and personal bond to the tune of Rs 50,000 each. However,the judge also asked those bailed out that they shall not leave the territorial jurisdiction of the court and remain present during their trial in the court.

Three people had died and over 60 injured,while property worth crores was razed to ashes,during communal violence that hit Kishtwar on Eid this August. The violence,which lasted for nearly a fortnight and led to imposition of curfew in eight districts of Jammu region,also led to the resignation of local MLA Sajjad Ahmed Kitchloo as Minister of State for Home,besides the suspension of the then Deputy Commissioner and Senior Superintendent of Police in the district..

In the wake of allegations and counter allegations from members of both communities,the state government also ordered a judicial probe headed by Justice R C Gandhi,a retired judge of the High Court. The Commission is yet to submit its report.
