Allahabad mayor Abhilasha Gupta was Friday arrested and produced before the lower court in connection with a non-bailable warrant (NBW) issued against her and Nand Gopal Gupta Nandi, her husband and former BSP minister. The court released her on bail.

The Mayor alleged that Samajwadi Party MP from Allahabad Kunwar Reoti Raman Singh was behind the “unusual swiftness” shown by the police in arresting her.

Gupta has given an ultimatum to the police to file final reports in connection with certain cases registered against her husband within 24 hours or else she, along with all BSP corporators, would launch a demonstration at District Magistrate’s office from February 17.

On Thursday, Judicial Magistrate Gyanendra Tripathi had issued an NBW against the Mayor and Nandi in connection with a case of alleged violation of the model code of conduct by them during the campaigning for the Mayor’s election on June 23, 2012. A case was registered at George Town police station, naming the couple and a few others, for taking out a procession without permission.

The chargesheet in the case was filed on August 31, 2012 and the court had taken its cognizance on December 11, 2012. It had then issued summons to the accused. However, barring two of the nearly half-a-dozen accused, none appeared before the court.

Subsequently, the court issued bailable warrants in this connection on July 11, 2013. When nobody appeared again before the court, it issued an NBW Thursday.
