Four new variants behind recent Covid surge: The surge in Covid-19 cases this year have been driven by four variants — LF.7, XFG, JN.1 and NB. 1.8.1. — as per news agency PTI. NB.1.8.1 is a new Covid-19 subvariant that has been detected in India. The World Health Organisation’s (WHO) Technical Advisory Group on Virus Evolution has designated this variant as ‘Variant Under Monitoring’ — one with significant changes in virus characteristics but whose epidemiological impact remains unclear. At least one sample of this variant has been submitted to India’s Covid-19 genome sequencing consortium INSACOG from Tamil Nadu, The Indian Express had earlier reported.

Why are Covid-19 cases on the rise again? While multiple countries are now reporting a fresh spike in Covid infections, the fatality rate remains low. Most of the people who are Covid-19 positive are displaying mild symptoms. One of the main reasons why cases are spiking is that the protection from vaccination or past infection decreases with time, leaving individuals more vulnerable to reinfection. Like other viruses, SARS-CoV-2 continues to mutate. Some of these new variants may spread more easily or evade immunity to a greater extent, triggering fresh surges.
