A Naxal was on Sunday gunned down in an exchange of fire with security personnel in a dense forest of Chhattisgarh’s Bijapur district, police said. The skirmish took place at around 11.05 AM when a joint team of security men from various forces was out on a combing operation in the interiors of Mirtur police station limits, Bijapur Additional Superintendent of Police Mohit Garg told PTI.

Acting on inputs about the presence of Maoists in Hakwa and Hallur village areas of Mirtur, a composite squad of Chhattisgarh Armed Force (CAF), Central Reserve Police Force’s 199th battalion and district force, had launched the operation yesterday towards the target area, the ASP said.

Today, when the security personnel were cordoning-off a forested patch near Hakwa village, about 450 kms from here, the Naxalites fired on them leading to a gunbattle between the two sides, he said.

However, the rebels soon escaped from the spot.

During search, the body of a male Naxal clad in ‘uniform’, a muzzle loading gun and other Maoist-related material were recovered from the spot, he said adding that the identity of the killed rebel was being ascertained. “The police team is reported to be safe and approaching back their camp,” he added.
