A Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) team probing alleged irregularities in carrying out the June 18 UGC-NET examination was allegedly attacked by locals in Bihar’s Nawada district, officials said Sunday. Four people were later arrested in this connection.

The incident took place on Saturday evening when a CBI team visited Kasiadeeh village in the area, news agency PTI reported. A mob gathered around the agency’s vehicles and heckled the officers, officials said.

An FIR was filed by the Rajauli police against the accused. The police arrested four people allegedly involved in the attack and they have been sent to judicial custody, officials said.

The University Grants Commission-National Eligibility Test (UGC-NET) exam was conducted on June 18 for which over 9 lakh candidates appeared across 317 cities.  The next day, on Wednesday, the Centre announced its cancellation following inputs from the Union Ministry of Home Affairs that “the integrity of the examination may have been compromised”.

On Thursday, the CBI filed an FIR in the case against unidentified people on a reference from the education ministry.

The UGC-NET exam — held twice every year (June & December) — determines the eligibility for ‘Assistant Professor’ as well as ‘Junior Research Fellowship and Assistant Professor’ in Indian institutes.
