Bhopal B.tech student death case: The postmortem report of 22-year-old BTech student Udit Gayaki, who died after allegedly being assaulted by policemen in Bhopal, revealed over a dozen injuries to his shoulders, waist, abdomen, and other areas, with the cause of death listed as damage to his pancreas.
Following the findings, Madhya Pradesh police have registered a murder case against constables Santosh Bamaniya and Saurabh Arya, though neither has been arrested yet.
The autopsy, conducted by a team of five doctors at Bhopal’s TIT College, cited “trauma-induced shock” and “damage to the pancreas,” indicating severe internal injuries from the beating. Injury marks included deep bruises near Udit’s eyes, forehead, shoulders, waist, abdomen, ears, and the back of his head. The report noted a ruptured pancreas, likely from a blow to the lower back. The procedure was video-recorded.
Deputy Commissioner of Police, Bhopal Range 2, Vivek Singh, told The Indian Express, “The deceased had at least 12 injuries. His pancreas was damaged, but this can’t be because of a blow from a stick. We need a detailed investigation to ascertain how this happened.”
“Both constables are yet to be arrested. We will first seek their custody and question them. An arrest will follow soon,” Singh added.
CCTV footage shows the incident around 1:30 am Thursday in Piplani. One video appears to show a policeman hitting Udit with a stick while another holds him. Bamaniya and Arya have been suspended.
Friends said they were returning from a party in Indrapuri when police spotted them. Udit ran into an alley, prompting the officers to chase him. His friends later found him with his shirt torn and body covered in marks. He was rushed to AIIMS Bhopal and declared dead on arrival.
Police said the constables admitted to assaulting Udit but claimed they did not intend to kill him. Udit’s family has demanded strict punishment. His father, Rajkumar Gayaki, an engineer, said, “I don’t know why my son died. The policemen should be arrested and handed a harsh sentence.” His mother is a teacher, and his brother-in-law is a DSP with the Hawk Force in Balaghat.
