Police officers on Monday visited the residence of Telugu actor Allu Arjun and handed over a notice, asking him to appear at Chikkadpally police station in Hyderabad on Tuesday morning. According to officials, Arjun told police he would cooperate with their investigation.
The development comes days after the actor was arrested on December 13, and granted interim bail for four weeks by the Telangana High Court, in connection with a stampede during the premiere of his film Pushpa 2 at a theatre in Hyderabad on December 4. A woman died and her nine-year-old son suffered severe injuries in the stampede that police said took place after Arjun arrived at the theatre.
The Revanth Reddy-led Congress government has taken a serious view of the incident, with the Chief Minister alleging in the Legislative Assembly that the actor disobeyed police orders to leave the theatre so that the unruly crowd of fans could be brought under control. He also said Arjun was insensitive towards the victims.
Arjun has denied the allegations and said that while he is committed to supporting the family, he was advised not to go to the hospital to meet them as it would lead to fans crowding around the hospital.
On Sunday evening, hours after the CM’s statement on the Sandhya Theatre incident in the Assembly, a few miscreants barged into the parking area of Allu Arjun’s home in Jubilee Hills and broke flower pots and indulged in vandalism before entering into a scuffle with security guards. Six persons were arrested in connection with the incident.
