As Air India flight crashes in Ahmedabad, a look at other plane accidents

Air India Ahmedabad Plane Crash News: A London-bound Air India flight carrying 242 passengers and crew members crashed in Ahmedabad’s Meghani Nagar just outside the airport perimetre Thursday afternoon. The aircraft, a Boeing Dreamliner, took off around 1.47 pm, but crashed 9 minutes after being given clearance for take-off.

Three National Disaster Response Force teams, comprising 95 personnel, have been moved from Gandhinagar to the plane crash site. A total of three more teams are being moved from Vadodara.

Here’s a look at a few other plane crashes that have occurred over the past year:

February 26: At least 46 people, including women and children, died after a Sudanese military aircraft crashed in the city of Omdurman. The military said in a statement that the plane crashed while taking off from the Wadi Sayidna air base north of Omdurman, the sister city of the capital, Khartoum.

April 27: Another fatal crash occurred in a rural part of Tennessee, where a single-engine Mooney M20TN went down about a mile south of a small airport in Sparta. All three people on board were killed. The FAA confirmed the crash and began an investigation into the cause.

May 5: A small plane crashed into a residential neighborhood in Simi Valley, killing two people and a dog on board, and damaging two homes. According to the Ventura County Fire Department, residents were inside the house when the aircraft struck the structure, however, all of them managed to evacuate safely and no injuries were reported among those on the ground.

May 7: One person died and nine others sustained burn injuries after an aircraft crashed and exploded near the village of Akali Khurd, close to Bathinda on May 7. The crash took place in the fields just 20 km from the Bhisiana Air Force Station.

May 8: Six people died and one person was injured when a helicopter heading to Gangotri Dham from Dehradun crashed near Gangnani in Uttarkashi. The crash occurred around 8:45 am along the Gangotri National Highway. Officials confirmed that seven people, including the pilot, were on board. Five of them died on the spot, while one succumbed to injuries during treatment.

May 17: Several people lost their lives in Finland after two civilian helicopters collided mid-air while flying the same route from Tallinn to Piikajärvi Airport in Kokemäki. Police said the helicopters crashed following the collision, and emergency teams responded quickly to the scene.

May 22: A small plane crashed into the Murphy Canyon neighbourhood of San Diego, California, resulting in multiple fatalities. The crash caused fires that damaged several homes and vehicles, and forced evacuations across several blocks. The FAA identified the aircraft as a Cessna 550, an aircraft that typically seats six to eight people.

May 29: At least two of the four crew members on board a South Korean navy patrol aircraft died after it crashed during a training flight. The P-3 aircraft had taken off from its base in the southeastern city of Pohang at 1:43 pm local time. The cause of the crash remains unclear.

June 1: In western Germany, at least two people died after a small passenger aircraft crashed into the terrace of a residential building as it was approaching an airport. The impact caused significant damage to the house and triggered a fire. North-Rhine Westphalia police confirmed that two people were killed in the crash.

June 9: In a tragic incident near San Diego, a small aircraft carrying six people crashed into the ocean about eight kilometres off the coast. US officials said the plane was a twin-engine Cessna 414, which went down around 12:30 pm shortly after take-off. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed the crash and launched an investigation into what led to the accident.

June 9: The same day a skydiving plane with at least 20 people on board crashed in Coffee County, Tennessee, about 60 miles south of Nashville. The crash took place near the Tullahoma Regional Airport. According to city spokesperson Lyle Russell, several people were injured and received medical treatment. There were no fatalities in this crash.

June 12: In another tragic incident, a small police plane crashed into the sea near a popular beach town in Thailand, killing all six people on board. According to officials, the plane was on a test flight ahead of a parachute training exercise in the Hua Hin district when it went down around 8 am. Royal Thai Police spokesperson Archayon Kraithong confirmed the details and said an investigation is underway.

Major flight crashes before 2025:

November 12, 1996: On this fateful day, a Saudi Arabian Airlines Boeing 747 and a Kazakhstan Airlines Ilyushin IL-76 collided mid-air near Charkhi Dadri, a village 60 km from New Delhi. All 345- 231 Indians and 83 Saudi nationals on board both the aircraft were killed. The collision occured at 6:40 pm after the Saudi Boeing had departed Delhi airport and the Kazakh flight was on its descent.

May 22, 2010: 158 people of 166 people on board died after an Air India Express Flight 812, flying from Dubai to Mangalore, crashed while landing at the Mangalore International Airport. It remains one of the deadliest aviation tragedies in Indian aviation.

Aug 7, 2020: An Air India Express flight with 190 passengers on board en route from Dubai skidded off the runway and split into two while landing at Kerala’s Kozhikode (Calicut) airport in heavy rain, leaving at least 17 persons dead, including the pilot.

July 24, 2024: Eighteen people died as a Saurya Airlines flight skid off the runway while taking off from the Tribhuvan International Airport at Kathmandu. As per eyewitnesses quoted by The Kathmandu Post, the plane flipped after the wing-tip hit the ground while taking off. They said that the plane immediately caught fire and plunged into a gorge on the eastern side of the runway.
